The ball will move away slowly, as if the player has just nudged it, or with pace if he has snapped his leg backwards with force. For shorter and gentler passes some players place the sole of their boot on top of the ball and push gently to roll it backwards. Backheeling a ball can change the game direction and fool opponents. It can be used for a short pass to a teammate behind you or, sometimes, to score goals. Players usually keep the ball just ahead of them using small nudges or taps with their feet to keep it moving but under their control. The tactile picture is of top Portuguese winger, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has played for Manchester United. He is one of the world's best at dribbling past an opponent. Sometimes, Ronaldo uses his raw pace to simply fly past, but on many occasions he needs to use skill and quick thinking to get himself and the ball past a defender. These mostly involve sudden changes of speed and direction.
