About Living Paintings for Blind Children and Adults

Why our work is needed

There are up to two million people in the UK living with severe sight loss, including 20,000 children. One in six of us will become blind or partially sighted by the time we reach 75. Blind and partially sighted people face constant challenges, for children they can’t take part in the same activities as their peers and siblings and often feel excluded, and in later life sight loss can be linked to increasing isolation and depression.
Giving access to the visual world through Touch to See books
Living Paintings helps by giving blind and partially sighted people access to the visual world.

Touch to See books for all ages

We do this by designing, creating and publishing Touch to See books for all ages. These books include raised tactile pictures accompanied by atmospheric, educational and entertaining audio guides. The audio guides, often narrated by famous people, help fingers explore the tactile images, tell the stories of the pictures and describe their features. In this way, the senses of touch and hearing combine to make up for the missing sense of sight. By including colour images of the topics in the tactile pictures, our books can be shared with sighted friends, family and classmates.
