Hello again, I'd like to tell you all about my trip to Olympia - the site of the Ancient Olympics in Greece. It was a long journey to get there, I can tell you. I flew to a Greek island called Zante, smelt the salty sea air on a creaky old ferry boat and then got on a noisy bus for several hours"¦but finally, I reached the birthplace of the Olympics - Olympia.
Now, long before there were huge crowds watching any running, jumping, and wrestling or throwing competitions, Olympia was a holy place dedicated to Zeus, the father of all the Ancient Greek gods. Ancient Greeks made long journeys to Mount Olympia to worship Zeus. They believed that their gods could harm or improve their everyday lives. To encourage Zeus to help them and not harm them, people made sacrifices such as pouring wine or killing and burning a calf. Over time, Olympia grew and the Ancient Olympic Games were started as a festival to celebrate Zeus's honour.
