I’m thrilled to introduce you to this touch and sound book. It’s about the fun of winter snowsports. You’ll learn about exciting action on the slopes and ice, from skiing to snowboarding, superfast bobsleigh and skeleton. You’ll hear from some medal winning athletes and they will share their stories and special memories with you.
Can you imagine racing headfirst down an ice track at 140 kilometres an hour, you would have to be very brave.
One of main events was a thing called the biathlon which is where you ski and then you lay on the floor with a gun and you shoot the gun and then you ski again and then you shoot the gun and then it’s your combined ski time and your shooting time. If you are blind, very often you have to use a white stick or a guide dog and suddenly we found in cross country skiing that you were just totally free of having to hold onto anyone else, you were away on the snow, you could get speed up, you could come down mountains, it was just fantastic.
For me it was that determination and that thought of there was no limits to what I can do. So if there’s anyone out there who needs that encouragement to get up and try something new or to find your passion whether it’s music, dance, sports just go and give it a try and see where you can end up.
