This is the story of the scruffy dog Hairy Maclary, who went off for a walk with a few of his friends, and got a nasty surprise. It is told in rhyme, using repetition to make it more accessible to young children.

Bitzer Maloney is a grey brown colour and looks like a whippet. Move down his slim neck find his smart yellow colour with red tag, then fill all over his smooth body.
Now find his long thin tail to the left. It curls up over his back and has a tight curl at the very end of it. I think it looks rather like a piece of spaghetti.
Feel his four long spindly legs. He's strutting along so one of his front legs is lifted up out in front of him and one of his back legs is stretched out behind him.
Feel his paws at the end of his legs and the ridges of his little toes.
