Fish – a staple and healthy food that’s fed our nation over the centuries. Maybe you have some favourite recipes? These two paintings are about first catching, then selling, fish over a hundred years ago. This is an atmospheric behind-the- scenes look at life on the Cornish coastline.
Listen to an audio clip
Move in and feel round the ridges of the beautifully constructed hull of a rowing boat, lying diagonally on the sand, bow towards us. It is blue-grey which is the dominant colour in this luminous painting. It is a Cornish beach not a Mediterranean one! Standing leaning back on the hull in profile is a young girl. She faces to the right. She is wearing the traditional dress of the fisherwomen woollen head shawl, long skirted dress covered by a russet apron and boots on her feet. Feel her bent arm as she rests on the boat. Move to the right and find the approaching figure of a fisherman.
