At over 4 feet high it was Ernst's largest painting to date.
When I look at this picture I feel rather uneasy and vaguely threatened by it. You may well share this feeling once you have explored the painting for yourself. I'll give you a brief description of it and then we shall turn to the thermoform.
It contains some very disturbing and ambiguous images. The canvas is almost filled by an enormous and menacing creature which appears to be made of metal of some kind. It is a sombre, greenish-grey in colour. This is the 'elephant' to which the title refers and it dominates the centre of the picture. On its back, this monster has a mysterious, unidentifiable mechanical device painted in bright colours: red, dark blue, pale blue and green.
