Biblical Scenes from the Old and New Testaments
Suitable for: Adults
This collection depicts incidents from both the Old and New Testaments. The Old Testament images are taken from the Bible Tapestry, Middle Rhine 1550 housed at the Burrell Collection. New Testament illustrations of the life of Christ are taken from the cycle of Giotto frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel, Padua.

The overall impression of the tapestry is one of colour and liveliness, because some of the most dramatic episodes of the Old Testament have been selected for portrayal. The stories are related in a series of five horizontal strips on the tapestry. These are often irregular in line as one dramatic incident demands more space than another and may overlap into the next strip. This creates a delightful higgledy-piggledy effect of puppet-like figures, all beautifully defined, enacting each scene. The tapestry is dotted with banners in Gothic script naming each character as we progress through the Old Testament stories. Incidentally the Biblical characters, after the story of Cain and Abel, wear a type of mediaeval clothing.
