Discover the joys of winter with these two beautiful works of art – one from the 18th century and one from the early 20th century. One shows how farm work has to continue whatever the weather, and the other shows the rather unlikely figure of the Rev Walker gliding serenely across a frozen loch

Four, splendid shire horses are plodding in a line through sparkling snow, one ahead of another. It's late afternoon and they are going home; the front two know the way and don't need to be led. Two more further back are drawing a cart piled high with hay or straw. An elderly, bearded man stumps along by the head of the leading horse of this second group; his shoulders are hunched and he is carrying a pitchfork. Another man sits on top of the hay in the wagon and holds the reins. Both men wear heavy hessian sacks over their shoulders to keep out the searing cold. The sky is full of snow laden clouds and the snow in the foreground is scored by cart tracks and dotted by hoof prints.
