Listen to an audio clip

Hello and welcome to a celebration of great women who changed the world. In this tactile and audio book, you can meet seven women and learn about their stories. There's a tactile picture of each woman, along with our audio description to guide you. This tactile picture is adapted from a self-portrait that Frida Carlo painted for a friend, Leon Trotsky. The overall impression of the picture shows a wealthy and distinguished lady, perhaps of some power and influence. She is wearing a floor length skirt and draped shawl. It was based on a watercolour sketch by James Andrews, who based his work on an unfinished painting by Jane Austen’s sister, Cassandra. So we can appreciate that this is a close likeness to Jane. In 1903 and 1911 Mary was given the world's top award for science, the Nobel prize. Not only was she the first woman to have received this award, she is the only person to have received it twice. Rosa Parks stood up for herself and others by sitting down. Rosa thought to herself "Why should I move?" Rosa did not budge.

What our members say

Thank you Living Paintings! I liked History and English at school, and was particularly taken with the fact that Mary Anning and Jane Austen were both featured in this pack. The picture of Mary Anning and her dog fossil hunting on the beach made her appear so humble. Editing this pack also opened up the opportunity to speak to a fantastically great young woman of our own modern day. Thank you to Living Paintings for giving me this and many other opportunities over the years! VI Editor
