This fact book takes you on a journey below the surface of the Earth to explore some amazing hidden spaces. TV presenter Dallas Campbell is our guide on the soundtrack. We start with looking at the structure of the Earth itself and how the seas and continents form, before heading into a limestone cave system and one of the world’s most amazing underground structures, dedicated to unlocking the secrets of the universe. We also dive to the bottom of the deepest oceans to discover some extraordinary life forms and consider the importance of the carbon cycle to our planet. Packed with fascinating facts and the chance to hear a most extraordinary musical instrument! This fact book may support subjects in the National Curriculum and could be used as an educational resource in class. Also good for home-schooling, homework-help, project work, independent learning and reading for pleasure.

Planet Earth is a phenomenally complex and incredibly fascinating place. And whilst we have explored much of its surface, so much more is waiting to be discovered both underwater and below ground from astonishing rock and fossil formations to new forms of deep sea life and breath-taking cave systems. To give an example, a six week expedition carried out by British cavers along with local guides in 2016 discovered an incredible 57 new caves in one single region of Vietnam. We already make use of the world below in many different ways, from deep sea fishing to prospecting for oil. Underground car parks and storage facilities release space above ground for houses, shops, offices and green spaces whilst underground public transport systems whisk millions of passengers between city destinations beneath the streets every day.
