We recognise rocks on the surface of the Earth as solid, hard materials. But when they are deep below the Earth's crust they are subjected to enormous heat and pressure and can turn into a thick liquid called magma. When magma is forced up to the surface of the Earth, it appears as a flowing river of molten rock that we call lava. As soon as it cools down in the air or water, it turns back into a solid rock again, although it will now look different from the original rock.
Of course the most obvious place that molten rock comes to the surface of the Earth is from an erupting volcano. When a large amount of magma builds up deep below the Earth's surface it is forced up through cracks in the ground. The volcano itself is made from all the molten rock that has poured out and solidified in the past, so it usually has a cone shape.
