Akeyo is looking at a black hen - she has a smile on her face and is watching a brown and white butterfly flutter above the hen's head. They are all outside, as the sky is a beautiful blue behind them so it must be a lovely, warm day. In front of them there are the tips of long yellow and green grass.
If you turn over the front cover you will find the first feely picture. Feel all over it with both hands. These are the two main characters of our story and they are holding hands. On the left is Akeyo and on the right is Handa.
Let's begin with Akeyo who is standing up and facing us. Start at the top of her head, can you feel her hair? It is black and feels quite bumpy doesn't it? Her hair is braided in seven thick plaits close to her head to keep it tidy for when she does her chores and to keep her cool too, as some parts of Kenya can be very hot.
