Thomas has always wanted to be top of the class, and he finally gets his chance to be the star pupil when the local primary school has a fete. Stories in this series have uncluttered artwork with a simple but exciting text.
Here's Thomas, chuffing along the track, coming up to the village school. It's a lovely sunny day, and there are lots of children playing outside, running about and playing catch with a bright yellow ball. There's a stone wall between the playground and the railway track, but they can see Thomas and hear him coming, and Thomas can see them and hear them playing.
*
Inside the playground there are lots of children: two are playing conkers, a little girl is skipping, there's a paper aeroplane whizzing through the air, here's a girl with a yo-yo, there's a teacher with a school bell in his hand, ready to ring it for the end of playtime, and there are lots of children waving at Thomas as he runs alongside the school, on the other side of the wall.
