Giovanna Fletcher helps blind children experience classic children’s book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar

5th May 2022

First published in 1969, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a classic picture book that has been enjoyed across generations. The iconic illustrations by Eric Carle are instantly recognisable to millions of adults and children alike, but not perhaps to the 25,000 blind children in the UK – until now.

We’re so pleased to announce the latest addition to our collection  – or at least a rework of an iconic classic – The Very Hungry Caterpillar! Our latest version of the book has received the incredible support of Giovanna Fletcher, who has voiced the audio element of the book, guiding little fingers as they feel every stroke of the colourful feely pictures and describing the illustrations throughout the book, so blind children can enjoy the full magic of this classic story.

Giovanna said:

“I love what this charity does. Picture books bring so much joy to children and their families, but the words are only half the story. Living Painting’s awesome work means blind children can get the full experience. Accessibility is so important, and it’s been fantastic to work with them on their mission to make children’s literature truly inclusive.”

“Everybody loves The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It’s a staple in school book nooks and bedroom bookshelves alike – enjoyed by sighted children all over the world. We’re so incredibly proud to have re-released our very special version for blind children so they don’t miss out on Eric Carle’s wonderful story. It’s been wonderful to have worked with Giovanna on creating something that will bring so much joy to thousands of children.”

The book is available to borrow for free from the charity’s postal library for blind children, joining almost 200 others currently in our collection!
