Explore the seasons with Squirrel! Two new adventures for blind children land in our library

3rd May 2024

The changing of the seasons is a perfect time to start talking to little ones about nature. Picture books can be the perfect vehicle for this – and our members are always requesting new titles that explore the changes we see throughout the year. So, we’re thrilled to announce two new accessible Touch to See picture books featuring one fierce little hero. Let’s meet Squirrel, the star of That’s My Flower and The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming and Nicola Slater.

With a twinkle in his eye and a skip in his step, Squirrel embarks on two charming adventures exploring the themes of Autumn and Spring. Both accessible picture books are a fantastic way for blind and visually impaired youngsters to get reading and explore the changing of the seasons.

We’re delighted to be launching these two wonderful Touch to See picture books at the same time, lovingly adapted into accessible versions that can be explored through touch and sound. The illustrations have been beautifully handcrafted into 3D versions and come with audio descriptions by actress Felicity Montagu and comedian, writer and podcaster Cariad Lloyd – who guide little fingers over the feely illustrations to blind children build a picture of the action in their minds.

Let’s explore the books!

The Leaf Thief

Squirrel is feeling a little cross. Where have all the leaves gone? They were only there yesterday and now they have disappeared. Somebody must have stolen them – and Squirrel decides to find the culprit!

A beautiful, laugh-out-loud, story that will help the children in your care explore the autumn months. Audio described by the fantastic Felicity Montagu and includes a special additional audio track that explains all this autumnal!

That’s My Flower

Squirrel’s thrilled to have the leaves back as the warmth of Spring returns. Even the flowers have started sprouting – and Squirrel spots the most beautiful one he’s ever seen! After what happened in autumn, he’s not taking any chances. He must keep that flower safe!

More belly-laughing adventures, audio described by Cariad Lloyd and a special additional track that helps blind and visually impaired youngsters learn all about Spring!

More seasons to explore!
