This fact book is all about amazing vehicles, from the exhilarating speed of the McLaren Formula racing car to the vast distances a container-ship travels. There is also speed on two wheels: the Ducati 1198 motorbike ridden by Moto GP legend and champion Carl Fogarty, and the revolutionary Lotus track racing bike that helped Chris Boardman win gold in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
We then speed on to the water in a sports hovercraft and learn ‘how it works’. Then we witness the amazing feats of bravery and rescue in the form of an Air Ambulance helicopter and the RNLI Tamar lifeboat. Then we jet off on a 747 jumbo jet and learn about its Royles Royce engines. Then we launch into space on board the Virgin Galactic. We also introduce the topical issue of carbon footprint and the effect global transportation has on the environment. We study the journey of a banana, from tree, to sea, to supermarket, following its journey on a container-ship and Sainsbury’s delivery lorry. Each audio commentary is introduced by TV presenter Dallas Campbell and each tactile picture is described by a young roving reporter, live on location and music and sound effects set the scene. This fact book may support subjects in the National Curriculum and would be useful as an educational resource in class. Also good for home-schooling, homework-help, project work and independent learning.
