The horses are made using bamboo cane that has been bent into shape and then fixed to an aluminium frame with waxed thread. Thin material is stretched between the canes and strips of leather added for the mane and tail.
The horse puppets are worked by three actors two inside the body of the horse and one who operates the head. They call themselves the Head, Heart and Hind and they must work seamlessly together as a team to give life to the horse. Their movements are choreographed, to give the effect of moving like a real horse. The puppeteers breathe together and make noises such as whinnying and snickering in reaction to what's happening on stage. Noises a horse would make. Because they are behaving like a real horse, each performance might be slightly different as they react to what's happening around them. It's tough, physical and demanding work as they have to bend their bodies to manipulate the puppets.
