This fact book is the perfect farming guide for young people. Visit a large mixed farm in the south of the UK and hear about the work of the farmer during each season of the farming year – from hedge laying in the winter to spring lambing and summer harvesting. The book also talks about how food gets from “Farm to Fork” including milk production and combine harvesting. Organic farming is also covered with a visit to Sheepdrove Organic Farm to learn how they grow crops and rear animals without the use of chemicals. This is a introduction to learning about farming and agriculture in the UK and as such may support subjects in the National Curriculuma, an educational resource in class. Also good for home-schooling, homework-help, project work and independent learning.

Hi, Holly here. Let's find out about how they rear their animals organically at Sheepdrove farm. They aren't given drugs to keep them healthy, so why don't they get ill? On a well-run organic farm the animals will only stay in one field for a certain amount of time, and then they will be moved to a fresh field. This helps break the cycle of pests and diseases. Animals are part of field rotation, breaking the cycle of crop problems and fertilising the land with their manure. Here at Sheepdrove the animals are kept in big fields so they can roam freely and get enough grass to eat. Disease is less likely because the animals aren't overcrowded. Some farms use hormones to make their animals grow faster but this isn't allowed on organic farms. walking and countryside sounds, pigs grunting, bird song sounds Now let's head over to the woodland area to see where the organic pigs roam freely.
