30th October 2025

The cover page of Two Little Dickie Birds. In it, Peter and Paul, a pair of colourful birds, who are perched atop a wall. There are flowers before them, surrounded by busy bees. The tops of trees are in the distance.

We’re delighted to add Two Little Dickie Birds to our library of Touch to See picture books for blind and visually impaired children, thanks to the generous support of the Fence Club Trust Fund.

We all know how the classic nursery rhyme goes:

Two little dickie birds sitting on a wall

One named Peter, one named Paul

This beloved rhyme, and the performance that goes with it, has a special place in the hearts of parents and children alike. Now, thanks to the incredible work of our volunteers, who produce all of our Touch to See picture books, the story of Two Little Dickie Birds can be experienced by blind children too!

What goes into a Living Paintings book?

First of all, we start the most exciting part of a Living Paintings book which is our signature tactile illustrations – raised images depicting key scenes and characters from the book. Each one of these is hand-carved into wood by one of our volunteer carvers, then placed into our thermoform machine and pressed into a plastic sheet to form the tactile image. These are then hand-painted by our volunteer painters, and inserted into the book.

For this book, the tactile images include Peter and Paul perched atop a wall, a pair of very happy hedgehogs, and two smiling frogs leaping from a lily pad.

The title page of Two Little Dickie Birds. The text 'Two Little Dickie Birds sitting on a wall' is above a picture of the birds flying through a blue sky. Atop this, a clear sheet of braille dots.

To encourage independent and shared reading, the text of the story is printed in braille on clear plastic sheets. This means that both sighted and non-sighted children can engage with the book together!

Each book is also accompanied by an audio descriptive guide – available physically as a CD or USB, and via streaming on our website. The audio description describes all the illustrations in the book and also guides children through the tactile images so that they hear what their fingers are touching to help them visualise the characters and scenes from the book.

For this wonderful book, we’ve had the help of comedian Harry Hill, whose perfectly playful descriptions will help little fingers on their way to understand in the way they know how: through touch and sound.
