Tactile titles perfect for Pride Month

8th June 2026

Two images. The first is of a pink and white campervan with two men - one light, one dark - sitting inside, a pride flag flying through the window. The second is of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, whose body is lots of different colours.

June marks Pride Month and, as always, we’re flying the Pride flags high at Living Paintings… This month is the perfect time to speak to children about love in all its forms, as well as acceptance, inclusivity, and being true to your authentic self. So, to help children who are blind or visually impaired feel included in these conversations, we have some wonderful accessible book recommendations!

Grandad’s Camper

First up is Grandad’s Camper. Written and illustrated by Harry Woodgate, it’s a wonderful audio tactile book with LGBTQIA+ themes.

A tactile image of a pink-and-white campervan. Two young men sit inside - one is light-skinned, the other dark-skinned. A Pride flag waves in the wind.

Grandad’s Camper follows the story of a girl and her grandad who takes them on a special campervan trip, sharing heartwarming stories of his adventures with the late Gramps, Grandad’s partner who passed away.

This touching tale of sharing stories is one that will resonate with all age groups. Young readers can learn about the many different forms of love, as well as the joy of spending quality time with family and friends.

Elmer

Another brilliant story of inclusivity is the beloved Elmer, written and illustrated by David McKee.

A tactile page of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant facing side-on.

In this book, join Elmer the Patchwork Elephant on his very first adventure! Elmer is ashamed of being different from the other elephants. One day, he disguises himself to blend in with the herd but is soon caught; when the rest of the herd find out what Elmer’s done, they decide to celebrate his uniqueness.

Our accessible adaptation includes three tactile images and clear braille inserts, all handmade by our team of dedicated volunteers, and an audio guide, read by Sue Pollard, that guides readers through all the illustrations in the book, helping them access the story in a way that works for them.

Through exploring different stories and different perspectives in an accessible and inclusive way, we’re giving children who are blind or visually impaired, the tools they need to more fully understand themselves and others.
