Len’s Repair Shop – help repair, restore and rediscover books for blind children today

2nd December 2025

850 audio tactile books for blind children need repair.

These aren’t just any books sitting in storage – they’re beloved stories that have already brought joy to children, now waiting to be rediscovered by the next young reader.

Each damaged page is evidence of a child who loved it so much they returned to it again and again. These 850 books were out of circulation while they were repaired. Books sitting unused, while children wait.

That’s why we’ve launched Len’s Repair Shop.

An elgerly gentleman stands in a woodwork studio. He is looking at the camera. On his work table he has a wooden block with a carved picture book illustration.

Len, who sadly passed away this year, was a long-time and much-loved volunteer at Living Paintings. Len loved nothing more than tinkering in his workshop, repairing and restoring everything, kindly including our books.

This is why we proudly name this appeal Len’s Repair Shop.

We would like to say a big thank you to David Melling, the author and illustrator of the wonderful Hugless Douglas books. David kindly drew a series of illustrations for us showing the process of making a Living Paintings audio tactile book.  We have used these brilliant drawings for our campaign because they truly bring our story to life showing each stage of our production.

Every penny you donate will fund work that directly impacts the lives of children who are blind or visually impaired by giving them access to the visual world through our unique Touch to See picture books.
