Ancient Games – the history of the Olympics
Clive Gifford, Living Paintings
The Winter Games have come to a close and, throughout, we’ve helped blind and visually impaired children access the Games with our Winter Snowsports box set. We also saw the support of a familiar face… none other than British legend Eddie the Eagle!
There’s a reason we all know who Eddie the Eagle is. He became the unlikely star of the 1988 Winter Olympics when he was the first-ever Great British representative in the ski jump. Despite finishing last in both the 70 and 90-meter jumps, he still became the British record-holder, thus cementing his place in British history – and even more importantly in everyone’s hearts.
With his achievements at Calgary, Eddie made what was once considered inaccessible, accessible. And, with our Winter Snowsports box set, that’s exactly what we’re doing for blind and visually impaired children – helping them access and understand the Winter Games in a way that works for them: through touch and sound.
All our box sets contain hand-made tactile images, as well as fun and informative booklets. For the Winter Snowsports box set, we’ve included tactile versions of some of the key disciplines: 1) a skier and a snowboarder, 2) a skeleton rider and bob sled, and 3) a skier and their skis.
The box also includes fun audio guides which provide commentary about the Games. You will likely recognise some of the voices, which include JJ Chalmers, Clare Balding, Menna Fitzpatrick, Chemmy Alcott, and former Paralympic skier Mike Brace!
Thank you so much, Eddie, for your support.
Our Winter Snowsport box set is available to order from our FREE postal library.
You can also find a variety of other titles related to the Olympics – why not explore those while you’re at it?
