October is Black History Month. This year’s theme is “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” providing a powerful tribute to the resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community across the globe.
This year, the theme highlights the profound contributions made by Black people be they leaders, activists, or pioneers who have shaped history, while also looking towards a future of continued empowerment, unity, and growth.
We have a wonderful book in our library that could be used to help children understand a little bit more about Black history in Britain.
Coming to England written by Baroness Floella Benjamin is a story about the triumph of hope, love, and determination. It’s the inspiring true story of Baroness Benjamin and her journey from Trinidad to London as part of the Windrush generation.
Follow ten-year-old Floella as she and her family set sail from the Caribbean to a new life in London. After spending two weeks on a ship, Floella finds herself in a cold and unfriendly London, wondering what her new school will be like and if she’s going to meet the Queen!
Filled with optimism and joy, yet deeply personal and relevant, young children can follow Floella’s experiences of moving home and making new friends in a new country.
Alongside vibrant illustrations by Diane Ewen, this book will help you and your child explore the important issues that will be coming up in school and all around them in October during Black History Month.
Living Paintings is always here to help. Explore our library of over 200 titles.

With Coming Home, blind and visually impaired children can celebrate Black History Month and feel the magic of Floella’s beautiful story. Members can order their copy for free from our postal library.

Another title your child may love is Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman.
