Celebrating Roald Dahl Day at Living Paintings

12th September 2025

Three images. On the left side, an image of Willy Wonka sits atop of a tactile adaptation. On the right, two tactile images. One contains an ensemble of characters (Mike Teevee, Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde), the other contains an image of Matilda running away with Miss Honey.

September 13 marks Roald Dahl Day, where we celebrate the timeless stories of Roald Dahl, with their wicked humour and unforgettable illustrations. Blind and visually impaired children, however, miss out on the visual element, so we’re celebrating our Roald Dahl collections for blind children!

Why do we celebrate Roald Dahl?

Roald Dahl’s stories have universal appeal. They speak to all the greatest things about children – wonder, whimsy, imagination – but also tackle very difficult subjects, like poverty (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), neglect (Matilda), and more.

We also celebrate the marvellous illustrations that accompany these stories, the most famous of which come from Sir Quentin Blake. These images, with their simple and friendly style, bring the weird and wonderful worlds of Dahl to life, and can transport you back to your childhood in a flash!

Blind and visually impaired children have previously missed out on this experience.

Living Paintings is here to help.

Our Roald Dahl collections

This image shows a tactile image of Charlie Bucket holding Grandpa's Joe's hand. It sits atop the flat version, which is in colour. Charlie looks up at his grandpa, who smiles down at him. He holds the Golden Ticket and looks very nervous and excited.

Living Paintings has two Roald Dahl collections, available for FREE from our postal library, which contain tactile versions of key characters from Dahl’s work. In Volume One, little fingers can explore raised images of Danny, the Champion of the World, The BFG, and Matilda. Volume Two, on the other hand, contains tactile images with key characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach.

As with all our boxsets, the Roald Dahl collections come with an audio guide. These guides do not read the stories, but instead describe the details of the images, helping little fingers along their journey to see through touch and sound.

To make sure every reader gets the most from our boxsets, we include handy guidance notes. This way, both sighted and non-sighted readers are active participants in the experience, and can enjoy the works together.

For something Roald Dahl adjacent, why not explore our range of Touch to See adaptations of the works of Quentin Blake? Our library contains Quentin Blake’s ABC, Mister MagnoliaMrs Armitage: Queen of the Road, and Fantastic Daisy Artichoke!

With these collections, blind and visually impaired children can celebrate in the joy of Roald Dahl Day! Members can order their copy to borrow for free from our postal library.
