This is just one of many assumptions made by sighted people about blindness.
At Living Paintings we know this couldn’t be further from the truth. Our tactile-audio books bring the magical world of pictures, books and learning to life for children who are blind and visually impaired, and we’re on a mission to alter perceptions.
So, to mark World Sight Day, we spoke with one of our incredible trustees, Louis Moorhouse. Due to childhood cancer, Louis has been blind since he was two, and has used Living Paintings books ever since.
His candid insight into the realities of living with blindness highlights misconceptions and assumptions that sighted people make about him on a regular basis. Louis offers his thoughts on how he overcomes those assumptions and how with humour he tries to break down barriers with sighted people so that he is seen as a person first and not his disability first.
This is the first in our new series called Blind Assumptions, where we give space to people who are blind and visually impaired to tell their stories. Keep your eyes peeled, as there’s a lot more on the way!
Welcome to Louis Moorhouse and Blind Assumptions.
Thank you to Louis for his time, honesty and most of all humour!
We would love to share your stories, anecdotes and pet hates regarding blind assumptions. Please get in touch with us if you have a story to share.
