A brand-new animal-themed picture book is entering the Living Paintings library… It’s Tidy by Emily Gravett! With handcrafted tactile illustrations and braille inserts, and an audio guide from Yorkshire’s own Sean Bean, it’s great for curious readers with an interest in the natural world.

Pete the badger likes everything to be neat and tidy at all times, but what starts as the collecting of one fallen leaf escalates and ends with the complete destruction of the forest! Will Pete realise the error of his ways and set things right?
From the badger’s black-and-white fur to the forest’s fresh foliage, Tidy is beautiful to look at and a joy to read. Now, thanks to our audio tactile adaptation, blind children can feel along with the badger’s plight, just the same as their sighted peers!
Tidy, like all our audio tactile adaptations, has been handcrafted by a team of dedicated volunteers.

Every single Emily Gravett illustration begins as a line drawing. These line drawings are then turned into wood carvings – thanks to the help of our master carvers – and placed into a thermoform machine, wherein a plastic sheet is pressed over top, forming the tactile image. Lastly, our skilled painters give the images a much-needed lick of paint; like our badger friend, they’re very, very tidy!
For the audio guide, we’re thrilled to have the involvement of Yorkshire’s finest: Sean Bean. His descriptions guide little fingers over the raised images, helping blind children to understand the illustrations and story in a way that works for them: through touch and sound. Thank you so much for your support, Sean.
Tidy is available to pre-order from our free postal library. Order it today – we won’t think you’re badgering us!
