This Discovery Box gives a fun and engaging introduction to tropical rainforests and the incredible plants, animals and people who live there. Explore rainforests around the world and discover what makes these habitats so special. This box set includes a world map tactile picture with marked tropical rainforests, and also tactile pictures of the layers of the rainforest, and a range of fascinating rainforest animals, to help build a rich understanding of this unique and important environment.
This Discovery Box is designed for blind and visually impaired children aged 7 to 11 years old. However, the contents may be suitable for children of different ages, depending on their interest and abilities. This resource may be used to support teaching and learning of subjects across the National Curriculum Key Stage 2, as well as a leisure and entertainment activity at home.
The actress, Kristin Atherton, explorers Levison Wood and Lucy Shepherd, and film producer Alistair Fothergill lend their voices.
Tropical Rainforests are some of the warmest, wettest and noisiest places on earth. They grow in hot parts of the world near the Equator where there is lots of sunshine and heavy rain all year round. Rainforests are filled with towering trees, rushing rivers and millions of living things, from brightly coloured birds and insects, to monkeys, snakes and jaguars. Using the tactile pictures and the audio descriptions we’ll travel across the globe to discover where tropical rainforests grow.
The Goliath Bird Eating Spider is the biggest tarantula in the world. It has a leg span of up to thirty centimetres, about the size of a dinner plate, and can weigh up to 170g. Despite its strange name this spider doesn’t usually eat birds, although its big enough to be able to eat them.
Around six percent of all of earth’s land surface is covered in tropical rainforest, yet this relatively small land area contains at least half of all the planet’s plant and animal species, and new species are being discovered all the time.
