Sponsored by: The Edward Gostling Foundation
A breathtaking picture book about incredible animal migrations, illustrated by the winner of the 2019 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, Jenny Løvlie.
Over the cold, mirrored waters of the Arctic, a tiny tern sets off on the world’s longest animal migration. On her way, she passes humpback whales, caribou, Canada geese, leatherback turtles and monarch butterflies, each on their own incredible journey south for winter. When the Arctic tern finally arrives, she must find a new home on the Antarctic shore . . . until it’s time to return to the northern skies once again.
A beautiful, lyrical and reassuring bedtime story, perfect for young animal lovers, with a map and double-page spread of non-fiction facts at the end.

Hello my name’s Megan McCubbin and I am a wildlife presenter, zoologist and conservationist. This book is about a wonderful little bird called an Arctic Tern. Every year Artic Terns make an incredible journey - from the very north of our planet, the Arctic to the very south - the Antarctic.
Migration is when an animal moves from one place to another in search of a new home to live in for part of the year. Animals migrate for many different reasons, such as to find food and have babies, but all the creatures in this book leave a cold place for a warmer one.
There are lots of different whales but this one is a Humpback whale which is one of the biggest. It’s swimming amongst a group of whales, which is also called a pod. Like the tern, they’re on their way south for winter. Our little tern swoops down to take a closer look at these massive animals and watches them blowing huge sprays of water when they swim up to the surface.
