The BFG / Danny the Champion of the World

We’re going to look at pictures from the book, ‘Danny, the Champion of the World’. He’s a happy boy who loves his father very much. The first thermoform, or feely picture, shows Danny on his fifth birthday, and also the old caravan he and his father live in together. We can’t see inside the caravan on this thermoform, but it is quite small. Danny says that it’s not much bigger than a modern bathroom, but oh, he does love living in it. Inside is one room with two bunks - Danny sleeps in the lower one. A wood burning stove keeps them warm, and they use a paraffin burner to cook, and a paraffin lamp lights the room. Although there’s no electricity, and it’s old and rickety, to Danny it’s his snug and cosy home. And every night, when he’s tucked up into his bunk, his father tells him the most marvellous stories. He told him the story of the BFG, which you may have heard also.The thermoform doesn’t show the apple tree which is right behind the caravan. Sometimes at night when it’s windy the apples fall onto the caravan roof. The thumping sound on the roof doesn’t worry Danny though, because he knows what’s making the noise.
